Mesh cathode- an economic electrode for various applications



Stainless steel twin wire cathode mesh is produced from SS316L grade materials to wind cathode frames in sludging electrowinning cells. Twin wire wound mesh is produced from 0.152mm diameter wire and provides great surface area for precious metal electrowinning. Electrowinning mesh is also known as knitted stainless steel mesh which is a porous blanket of layered and knitted stainless steel wire which is used in electrowinning cells. This mesh can be fabricated to fit all cathodes and can be easily re-used by washing the metal on the cathode. This mesh can be used in new or old electrowinning cells and as per experts, the knitted stainless steel mesh can last for maximum 20 months before replacement.

Mesh cathode is one of the types of flow-through cathode which is a three-dimensional cathode because of the fibrous or particulate nature of the cathode. Flow-through cathode has high real-to-apparent surface area ratio which can reach 10,000. The mesh cathode has an intertwining matrix of conducting fibers through which the contaminated solution flows and on which the metal deposits. Mesh cathode can be used as the anode in the conventional plating cell and metal can be stripped from flat cathode to recover the heavy metal. Mesh cathode cells have low capital costs and low removal limits as the plating mechanism is simple. During the copper and cyanide electrochemical removal from a heavy-metal-laden wastewater using a mesh electrode, the removal of 98% and 99% could be reached for cyanide and copper, respectively after 30h, however, the operation of mesh cathodes was affected such as blockage in the mesh by unequal depositing of metals in the mesh or due to huge particles being caught in the matrix, high operating costs as the process is complicated and batch processing of the solution.

 As per a study of the effect of cathode-mesh electric field on a streak image tube, pulse current density followed by a critical field value exists. Electric field is increased when the field strength is lower than the critical value in order to improve the temporal resolution of the image tube but the temporal resolution can’t be improved if the field is greater. The critical electric field is 10kV/mm under current density conditions of 20A/cm2 which is important for designing the streak image tube.

Hastelloy C22 wire- A versatile and highly corrosion-resistant alloy




Hastelloy C22 alloy is a nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy having high corrosion resistance to various environments. It also shows resistance to crevice corrosion, stress corrosion cracking, pitting, intergranular attack and oxidation. Hastelloy C22 is a variant of Hastelloy C276 and is more resistant to SCC and chloride-induced localized corrosion as compared to Inconel 625 and Hastelloy C4. In this alloy, the chromium content is increased to 21% (approx.) and molybdenum content is decreased to 13% (approx.) and this alloy has 1.7% Co and 0.2% V.

Hastelloy C22 wire is the best choice for extreme temperature and highly corrosive conditions, for example, this alloy wire can withstand extremely high temperature when Sulfur is present in a coal production plant and can withstand corrosion where solid waste is found such as a containment unit or a boiler. Hastelloy C22 wire is easily formable and weldable, therefore, it can adapt to any method such as a shielded metal, gas tungsten arc, or gas metal arc. This alloy wire naturally prevents the growth of grain boundary precipitates which is not the case with other alloys. Hastelloy C22 wire is versatile and is suitable for situations where devices with irregular shapes must be used in areas which would be highly corrosive for normal wiring.

Hastelloy C22 is practically used in areas where formic, nitric and ferric acids are present and in areas having cupric chlorides which normally destroy other alloys in a short period of time. Therefore, Hastelloy C22 is used by various industries such as sea water industrial equipment, chemical processing and nuclear fuel processing for many of their wiring needs. These industries can’t afford a wiring failure due to extreme conditions as that can be hazardous, therefore, they use Hastelloy C22 which is completely reliable.

Vanadium present in the alloy C22 makes it different than other alloys and vanadium is used to increase the existing properties of the metals. Among the 12 corrosion-resistant alloys under the Hastelloy brand, Hastelloy C22 has vanadium which combines with chromium, nickel, tungsten and molybdenum to produce an alloy with its characteristics up to extreme level.

Applications of HastelloyC22 include pollution control, marine, seals, fasteners, springs, medical devices, sour gas production components, pesticide production components, nuclear fuel reprocessing and components used in flue gas equipment and is used in various industries such as oil/gas extraction, chemical processing and power generation, paper processing, power, waste disposal etc. Hastelloy C22 can be formed as plate, wire, rod, forging, bar, sheet, tube and various other standard forms. Inconel 718 wire- Excellent performance at extremely hot and cold temperatures



Inconel 718 is a nickel-chromium-columbium (Niobium)-molybdenum alloy having excellent tensile strength, high yield, high strength, excellent fabrication characteristics and corrosion resistance. Inconel 718 has creep-rupture properties at high temperatures and operates at cryogenic temperatures of up to 1200 degree F (650 degree C).

Inconel 718 wire is appropriate for extremely hot and cold temperature conditions and is used by industries which rely on their equipments at all times. Inconel 718 wire alloy is manufactured in a different way than others as it is a nickel-chromium alloy having traces of columbium, iron and molybdenum. Hastelloy C-276: Corrosion resistant and durable


Hastelloy C- 276 is a Nickel superalloy with some great functional and structural properties.
 Hastelloy C-276 is a versatile and corrosion free alloy. It is a Ni-Cr-Mo super alloy which offers strong resistance to acidic and alkali media which results in the prevention of pitting, corrosion and SCC. In addition to this, Hastelloy C-276 offers good resistance to hypochlorite, chlorine dioxide media and chloride gas (wet).

Inconel 600 wire- a perfect alloy for high temperatures




It is an alloy wire of nickel-chromium-iron alloy 600 which has superb performance at high temperatures and is resistant to oxidation and deterioration. The nickel present in this alloy wire makes it resistant to chloride ion stress corrosion fracturing. This alloy wire doesn’t require age-hardening treatment due to strengthening and hardening done by cold work processes. This alloy wire can be used on various platforms because of its flexibility to be manufactured in different shapes such as flat, square etc.

Inconel 600 wire is a heat tolerant alloy that can resist temperatures up to 700 degrees and therefore it is used in high temperature areas such as chemical industries, food industries, automobile industries, gas turbine industries, nuclear industries etc. This alloy wire is also used in baskets, heat treatment fixtures and trays due its reliability in high temperature areas.

Applications of Inconel 600 wire in aerospace, chemical and nuclear industries as they need to rely on their machinery because if machinery fails then there can be a great loss.
